Esencia K-8 School is Growing!
The school year is about to start, so we sat down with Esencia K-8 School’s Principal, Josh Wellikson, to learn more about what is planned for the upcoming year. Esencia School is part of the award-winning Capistrano Unified School District and just a short walk or bike ride from every neighborhood in the Village of Esencia. The school is currently accepting students from preschool through 6th grade, with plans to expand to 8th grade in the next two years.
Esencia School first opened its doors in 2018, and they are already starting to grow! Last year the school welcomed 400 students in preschool through 5th grade, and this year they are expecting about 700 students. This includes six incoming kindergarten classes, up from three classes last year, and an inaugural 6th-grade class.
“What makes the school special is the people, the staff, students and the community. It isn’t just a school in a community. It is a school of the community,” said Josh Wellikson, Esencia Principal.
It is this strongly-held belief that drives how he runs the school. Two years ago, before Esencia K-8 was even opened, the school administration held monthly planning meetings with the community to ensure the community was really involved and their needs were heard.
Middle School Begins
The addition of the middle school is an important milestone for Esencia School. The first 6th grade class begins this month with 75 students. Mr. Wellikson and his staff are focused on the unique needs of these students as they transition out of elementary and begin to prepare for high school. Ensuring they have the skills to be successful in high school is a primary objective. The middle school will continue to grow with grades 7 and 8 being added in the next two years.
Along with the addition of the middle school, other changes are coming. Extended day kindergarten is now available to ensure these young students have a great start to their education. The Innovation Center will be offering even more hands-on learning and collaboration opportunities with new engineering and tech-based projects. Finally, a school garden is being planted on campus this year. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the beds, so please reach out to the PTSA if you are interested.
